Tie Rod System

Tie Rod System

What Is a Tie Rod System?

A tie rod system is a critical component in concrete formwork, providing tensile strength to maintain the alignment and stability of form panels during the curing process. It comprises a threaded steel rod and various accessories that work together to secure formwork in place, ensuring precise structural dimensions and preventing deformation under pressure.

Key Components

Tie Rod: The central element, typically made from high-strength steel, resists deformation and can withstand significant pressure. Common diameters include D12, D15, D17, and D20, with ultimate loads ranging from 70kN to over 180kN, depending on the material and design.

Tie Nut: Secures the tie rod in place, locking it to the formwork. Available in various types, including wing nuts, hex nuts, and combi nuts, each designed for specific applications.

Super Plate Combi Nut: Combines the functions of a standard nut and a bearing plate, distributing pressure evenly across the formwork surface to reduce stress concentrations.

Water Stop: Prevents water from penetrating through the formwork, ensuring a watertight seal in water-retaining structures like basements or reservoirs.

Tie Rod Plate Washer: Placed between the tie rod and other components, the washer evenly distributes load and prevents wear on the formwork system.

Tie Rod PVC Pipe: Acts as a spacer and protective sleeve for the tie rod, ensuring consistent spacing between formwork panels and preventing concrete from adhering to the rod during pouring.

Formwork Hex Nut Connector: Joins two tie rods, essential for projects requiring extended rod lengths. Its strong threading ensures a secure connection without compromising stability.

Steel Tie Rod Cone: Creates a clean separation point between the tie rod and the concrete structure, simplifying dismantling after curing and preventing damage to the concrete.

How It Works

Setup: Tie rods are threaded through formwork panels to establish proper alignment.

Fastening: Tie nuts and combi nuts are secured at both ends to lock everything in place.

Load Distribution: Super plates and washers work together to spread forces evenly.

Protection: Water stops and PVC pipes keep moisture out while maintaining alignment.

Removal: Once concrete hardens, components like hex nut connectors allow for clean removal without damaging the formwork.

Applications

Tie rod systems are versatile and used in various construction scenarios, including:

Wall Formwork: Ensures the stability of vertical concrete structures.

Column Formwork: Maintains alignment and strength during pouring.

Slab & Beam Formwork: Supports horizontal structures under load.

Retaining Walls: Provides tensile support to prevent movement.

Excavation Support: Stabilizes temporary structures during digging.

Bridge & Dam Construction: Adds tensile support to scaffolding and shoring.

Water-Retaining Structures: Ensures watertight integrity in basements and reservoirs.
